Welcome to The Ethos Project

Phase 1: evening classes

These divide as follows:
  • an introductory session previewing the strands to follow
  • three strands (A-C) with different topics, each of three sessions
  • (i.e. a total of ten sessions overall)
  • strands are staggered so sessions 2-4, for example, will be the first session of each strand in turn, returning in session 5 to strand A

The content of the three strands / themes is as follows:
  • A. History of Character Education
  • B. Academic Ideas
  • C. Current models and opportunities

Each session has a different title, giving some flavour of the content of these courses. This produces an overall session order for the ten sessions like this:
  1. Introduction.
  2. (A1) History 1: Greek and Christian models of character.
  3. (B1) Academic 1: Moral philosophy; ethics of care and justice.
  4. (C1) Current 1: International models of Character Education (1).
  5. (A2) History 2: The Enlightenment, science and Character.
  6. (B2) Academic 2: Authority vs. Self-actualisation.
  7. (C2) Current 2: International models and Character Education (2).
  8. (A3) History 3: Purpose of education: Victorians, virtues or VAT?
  9. (B3) Academic 3: Economic inequality and Character.
  10. (C3) Current 3: Championing Character through current themes in UK education.

The anticipated attendance is to come to all of sessions 1-4, and the remaining two sessions of any strand (a total of six sessions.) We encourage people to come to all ten sessions if they can make it. The evenings classes are driven by delivery of content and sharing of reflections on that content and on our own related personal experience.
