Background reading for the e-fora are as follows.

1. Student voice, student rights and self-led learning:

2. Citizenship versus character:

The first document will make clear the roles of the latter two.

3. Challenging social and organisational prejudices:

• start by reading the instructions and prompts in this focus option presentation
• you will also need this analysis of school time allocations from TEC INSET programmes
• finally, you will probably also benefit from reading "The lesson of logical positivism" (pp25-6) and both parts of "Final thoughts" (pp107-110) of the Character education dissertation on the TEC site; this suggests that the difficulty of defining Character education is itself its richness, and should not discomfort us, but reaffirm the need to challenge narrow views of education every day, and in every context in which we find ourselves
